National Coin Week honors the United States’ rich history of coinage and paper money, a history that President Ronald Reagan brought national attention to when he officially declared the third week in April as National Coin Week. He reignited American interest in precious metals by launching two of the most successful coin programs in the history of the U.S. Mint. Coins Observing Anniversaries in 2021
In 2021, the Mint is celebrating the anniversaries of three special coins. Because of those anniversaries, the theme of this year’s National Coin Week is “Money, Big & Bold.”
- This year, the Mint is releasing the Morgan 2021 Silver Dollar. It marks the 100th anniversary of the final year of the silver dollar designed by George T. Morgan, who was the Mint’s chief engraver. The first Morgan Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904.
- After a federal law required melting down America’s Morgan Dollars, the Mint introduced the silver Peace Dollar in 1921 to meet the demand for silver coins. Designed by American sculptor Anthony de Francisci, the Peace Dollar commemorated the end of World War I. Production of the Peace Dollar stopped in 1935, two years after the Great Depression ended.
- The Eisenhower Dollar, named after President Dwight Eisenhower, emerged in 1971 as the federal government’s first silver coin since the Peace Dollar. Designed by Frank Gasparro, the Mint’s chief engraver, the coin came out two years after Eisenhower died. The Mint issued the Eisenhower Dollar until 1978.
2021 Gold and Silver American Eagles
In 1983, President Reagan proclaimed the first National Coin Week.
“Since the beginning of history, coins have played an important role in the story of civilization. They reflect the economic development of their country of origin, as well as the scientific advancement and artistic values of the people who produce and use them,” Reagan’s proclamation states. “Today, millions of Americans collect coins for both pleasure and profit.”
Aside from the Ronald Reagan Presidential $1 coin, which the Mint released in 2016, two new coin sets honor the legacy of the 40th president and the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle program—a program Reagan kicked off when he signed the Gold Bullion Act of 1985.
The 2021 3-Coin Silver American Eagle MS-70 Reagan Legacy Set contains Silver Eagles from all three Mints (West Point, Philadelphia, and San Francisco) and features one of the final appearances of John Mercanti’s iconic eagle reverse design. Each coin is graded MS-70 and certified with a special Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) label signed by an esteemed member of the Reagan family.
U.S. Money Reserve released the silver coin set on February 6, 2021, which would have been Reagan’s 110th birthday. The set recognizes Reagan’s role as the father of the Silver American Eagle program.
To observe the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle program, the Mint announced in 2019 that the 2021 issues would debut brand-new reverse designs for the first time in the history of the series. However, unable to keep up with exceptional demand during last year’s gold rush, the Mint could not complete the new designs on time. Instead, the Mint decided to produce a limited run of 2021 Proof Gold Eagles with the original “Type 1” design before changing designs later this year.
The coins in U.S. Money Reserve’s 2021 4-Coin Gold American Eagle MS-70 Reagan Legacy Set are certified at the highest grades possible (PR-69/PR-70) and designated “First Day of Issue” by PCGS. Also, the “Type 1” designation certifies that these coins bear the original reverse Eagle design. Each coin is further enhanced with U.S. Money Reserve’s exclusive Reagan Legacy Signature Series specialty label, hand-signed by the president’s eldest son, Michael Reagan.
