Romance of the Royal Myrtle Plant

One crucial detail for any Royal wedding is the Myrtle flower. So where did the Myrtle plant come from? And why is it so popular for Royal weddings?

History of the Myrtle plant

The flower itself represents love, fertility and innocence. The use of the flower dates right back before the Royals to Ancient Greece. Initially used for Roman Wedding rituals, as the Romans firmly believed the flower represented love.

In addition, the Greeks received wreaths as athletic prizes. The wreaths were often made of gold resembling the Myrtle flower. They would be mainly worn to formal events due to being extremely fragile. Quite often they would also request to be buried with the wreaths. A wreath made of gold from 300-30 BC was discovered in 1977 at Vergina.

From here, Myrtle became more popular in the 19th Century in Germany. It is believed once a bride was married, they would be blindfolded for the evening dances. The younger girls would then dance around the newly bride. Once dances stopped, the wreath was placed on one of the girls’ heads. This would represent she would be the next to marry. – Perhaps where we now get the bouquet throw at modern-day weddings.

Myrtle at Osborne House

Queen Victoria is why Myrtle was introduced into Royal bouquets. Growing at her holiday home on the Isle of Wight there are reflections from her diary that she would often pace up and down her beautiful garden enjoying the delicious smell of Honeysuckle, Magnolias, Myrtle, and Roses.

Before it grew at Osborne Queen Victoria was gifted a posey of Myrtle from Alberts Grandmother in 1845. The first wedding that Myrtle was used in was 1850 within Victoria and Alberts Daughters bouquet.

Myrtle can still be found today at Osborne House growing on the Terrace walls which have grown there since 1852, and within the Children’s Garden at the Swiss Cottage.

A lot of Romance can be found on the Isle of Wight, read more information on Getting Married on the Isle of Wight.

What is the most common finger size for women in the UK?

The average ring size for women in the UK falls between finger size L and N.

The most common engagement ring size for women in the UK is size L. This information is based on our research from orders over the last 5 years. In detail, the UK average finger size for engagement rings falls between sizes L to N. From our own records, sales of rings measuring size L outnumber any other sizes.

Choosing average ring size when you have no idea of her finger size

Many buyers opt for an average ring size when they have no idea what size to buy. A mid-sized ring is easier to adjust from a midpoint. Choose a suitable style for adjustment. For example, an engagement ring with plain shoulders. In addition, choose a simple claw setting.

Size L equivalent in US finger size

The average finger size L lies close to a US size 6. Furthermore, Variations exist from one size chart to another. The above chart shows where size L falls in comparison to the US numerical size system.

Ordering a ring sizer to find out your finger size

If you need an engagement ring sizer, just follow the button on our product pages. Use it to find out your size or your partner’s ring size.

The average engagement ring size for women in the UK

The average engagement ring size for women in the UK is L. Equivalent to a US 6 (or just under.) As a result, we make more engagement rings in size L. In addition, size M and size N are popular sizes. For this reason, we make many of our stock rings in these sizes.

The average engagement ring size for women in the US

For women in the US, the average ring size is 6.5. This is comparable to size M in the UK. Interestingly, the average US size for women falls slightly larger than in the UK. For these measurements, we work off the correct engagement and wedding ring finger.

The average wedding ring size for men in the UK

For men in the UK, the average men’s ring size is between size S and size T. Moreover, this represents a medium-sized hand for men.

The average wedding ring size for men in the US

For US clients, the average wedding ring size is size 10. This is around T + 1/2 in the UK. Many US clients order our UK ring sizer. Alternatively, we work to US sizes. Reassuringly, we photograph all finished rings on a US size stick. This gives our US clients peace of mind when ordering in US sizes.

Best engagement ring styles for guessing her finger size

If you’re like many guys, uncertain of the finger size, you should consider a style of engagement ring that can be sized. The most common engagement ring size might not be the perfect choice for you. For this reason, you should choose a style of ring easy to re-size. For example, a ring design with a plain band. In addition, choose a regular claw or prong setting. In other words, choose a design suitable for size adjustments. Also, don’t choose a thin band. Resizing a ring thins the band at the back. As a result, a thin band offer less metal to work with. In situations where the band is far too thin, we often remake rings either partially or fully.

Is it better to guess for engagement ring size larger or smaller?

Many guys opt for a size that they know will be larger than her finger. The reasoning here is that she’ll be able to wear the ring. Going too small means she’ll be less likely to get it past her knuckle. The chances are, if you really have no idea, it will need re-sizing. For this reason, we routinely do this at no further cost. We merely ask clients to cover the small return cost of the postage.

Is there such a thing as a normal finger size?

There is no such thing as ‘normal’ ring size. We are all built very differently. For example, so of us have short, fat, fingers. In contrast, others have long thin fingers. Some of our clients worry about big knuckles. Conversely, other clients struggle with small knuckles. In addition, temperate and body fluid affect ring size. Finger sizes change through the seasons. For example, many buyers experience loose fitting rings in Winter. Despite sizing tools, we strongly recommend checking your size with a professional jeweller. At the same time, try on rings and find a size comfortable for daily wear.

Extra-large ring sizes for women

Please note that some clients require a larger size to the maximum ring size on our website. After reading our ring size guide, arrange a professional jeweller to have your finger measured. After you find out your ring size, contact us for a plus-size personal quote. We measure ring size under the UK size system but happily work to other systems such as US finger sizing.

Vintage Diamond Eternity Rings – Interwoven Ribbons and Twists

Vintage Eternity Rings - Ribbons , Bowties and Twists

Vintage diamond eternity ring styles

There is something magical and beautiful about vintage styling when it comes to jewellery. Vintage diamond eternity rings don’t appear that often in jewellery collections. As a result, we regularly create bespoke examples—crafted specifically for our clients. Recently, however, we introduced two brand new vintage diamond eternity rings into our collection.

Both rings appearing above now feature on our website. They include : –

Vintage bowtie eternity ring GHR009

Vintage diamond ribbon eternity ring GHR011

Please note that if you are unable to visit us to view our designs, we offer a ring sample loan service, available to UK and overseas buyers to try before you buy.

Milgrain eternity rings

But what is Milgrain? Milgrain is a distinctive detail that features in many vintage designs. Small beads of raised metal follow along edges creating a uniform pattern on each side of the ring. Rings featuring a milgrain edge give jewellery less of a reflective finish, offering more subtle qualities. In contrast, the lower part of the band features a mirror polished finish.

Vintage styled eternity rings with grain settings

Grain settings work well for any vintage styled eternity rings. White diamonds grain set into white metal yielded textures reminiscent of antique jewellery creations. Textures of soft crepe de chine and pin-tucked lace. Some genuine antique eternity rings feature old-cut diamonds around the band. Furthermore, most modern eternity rings, set with diamonds use modern round brilliant cut diamonds with 57 facets.

Platinum vintage styled diamond eternity rings

Decadent antique eternity rings from the late 19th Century tend to be Platinum. Platinum remains the most luxurious of precious metals. It wears over time to achieve a natural patina seen as desirable for genuine vintage diamond rings.

The grey-white appearance of Platinum, adds a luxurious feel to an eternity ring.  As a result, Platinum is very popular for eternity rings. In addition, Platinum is a rigid metal, suitable for setting diamonds. Furthermore, it has hypoallergenic properties, perfect for sensitive skin.

Today, vintage-styled eternity rings come in most precious metals. These include 950 Platinum, 18ct White Gold, 18ct Yellow Gold and 18ct Rose Gold. In addition, Fairtrade Gold provides a 100% ethical option.

Vintage eternity rings with ribbons and bows

A key feature of vintage diamond eternity rings included the imitation of antique lace. For example, woven bands, ribbon twists and platted ring designs combine with rows of small diamonds.

The necessity for a ring to fit around a setting gives jewellers the opportunity to deviate from a straight eternity band. As a result, interesting shaped eternity rings exist, working around awkward settings.

How long does it take to make a vintage diamond eternity ring?

Most vintage style diamond eternity rings take around 5 weeks to create.

The above designs are readily available (non-bespoke) vintage eternity ring styles. Both take around 4 weeks to complete.

We design, craft, set and finish your eternity ring during this timescale. First stages include an email or phone discussion (or appointment in our showroom.) Next, we move to a detailed quotation before any work commences. Contact us for more help and guidance on this unique service.

Opal – Luxury Jewellery Inspiration for October’s Birthstone

Octobers-birthstone-gold-opal-necklace

Celebrating Opal – the birthstone for October

October’s birthstone is Opal. Subtle in beauty, diverse in colour and perfect for October birthdays and anniversaries.

Owing to the diversity of shapes, sizes and colours, we create most Opal jewellery by bespoke design. To explain, no two Opals are the same. Furthermore, the colours vary from white to black with variations in orange from Fire Opals.

Fire opal and diamond halo ring

Example of a Fire Opal and diamond halo ring – made by bespoke design at Serendipity Diamonds

What is Opal?

Opal forms from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. Water flows through the earth and collects Silica from sandstone.

A Silica-rich solution falls into cracks and voids, caused by natural faults. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit. Over a long period of time, Opal forms.

Where is Opal mined?

October’s birthstone Opal comes from many different countries. These include Australia, Ethiopia Mexico and USA. In addition, from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Brazil and Indonesia.

Octobers Birthstone - Opal pendant in 18ct Yellow Gold

Caring for Opal. How delicate is October’s birthstone?

Opal’s toughness can be described as poor to fair—5-6.5 on Mohs scale of hardness. Most importantly, Opal does not respond well to changes in temperature. For example, intense heat can craze the surface. Moreover, Opal does to fair well over time in dry conditions. For this reason, we recommend cleaning in a gentle warm soapy water. Also, we suggest an Opal necklace or pair of Opal earrings rather than an Opal ring.

Opal rings often receive wear through damage whilst on the hand. Unlike rings, both pendants and earrings avoid similar wear. For this reason, they are the perfect luxury gift for an October birthday or anniversary.

Contact our friendly team for information on how to create the perfect item of Opal jewellery.
