A plain wedding ring, magically transformed with a show of dazzling channel-set diamonds
Adding diamonds to a ring
Adding diamonds to a ring will transform the ring into an entirely unique design.
Some of our clients have this in mind when they first purchase their wedding ring. Perhaps their wedding costs have soared and the plain wedding ring makes more sense at the time. Or perhaps the transformation at a later date fills-in for a diamond eternity ring. Certainly a lovely touch.
Elvish engraved wedding ring with a single flush set diamond added to the design
Adding diamonds can be an anniversary gift idea to celebrate a certain time of marriage. There are many reasons why this makes a great deal of sense and the many emails we receive asking for this service mean that people really do want to bling their wedding rings!
Or, an unwanted wedding ring after divorce can become an entirely new ring for a brand new life.
How many diamonds to add?
Diamonds can be added to the band at intervals, flush set into the metal and spaced out.
Or, they can be neatly channel set edge to edge, or grain set giving a more textured effect to the row of diamonds.
The number of diamonds will affect cost but can be minimal or extensive around the full circumference of the band.
How much does it cost to add diamonds to a wedding ring?
Since you already own the wedding ring, the cost of precious metal is not a consideration. Your cost is for the diamonds, and labour to carry out the work.
The diamond cost will depend on the size of the stones and how many are required. The diamond size will be limited by the depth of your ring.
Another consideration is the colour and clarity of the diamonds which are best matched to the engagement ring if this is also a diamond set.
Can you add just one diamond each year?
We can add diamonds progressively around a wedding ring depending on the setting style chosen. This works best for flush set diamonds spaced around the ring or grain set diamonds. Some clients choose a yearly anniversary to progressively add diamonds into their ring.
How does a wedding ring look with diamonds and without diamonds?
The following video shows two shaped wedding rings. The first wedding ring has no diamonds whereas the other ring has diamonds added and represents an eternity ring.
What diamond shapes can be added to a ring?
The most popular diamond shapes for adding diamonds to a ring are round brilliant cuts and square princess cuts. These are both the cut in very small sizes suitable for setting into slim wedding rings.
Clients often choose the diamond shape that best matches an engagement ring diamond.
For other styles of diamond such as the emerald cut, we often use Baguette -cut diamonds that flow beautifully along a machine cut channel.
Matching new diamonds to existing diamonds in your ring
If the engagement ring features diamond shoulders, adding diamonds to a plain wedding ring to match the wedding ring will create a well-considered pair of rings.
We recommend aligning the ends of the channel and matching the size of diamonds for a balanced look.
Can you put a bigger diamond in a ring?
Most engagement rings require a new setting to hold a bigger diamond. The depth of a wedding ring limits the size of the diamond. In some instances, adding a raised bezel opens up more possibilities to increase the size of a diamond or gemstone added to a ring.
Adding birthstones to a wedding ring
Consider adding your birthstone to a wedding ring. This option adds a unique colour to your wedding ring. The following image shows some of our birthstone wedding rings available in most types of gems.

Keep this in mind before buying a wedding ring
If you’re buying a plain wedding ring but want the option of having the same ring set with diamonds in the future, we strongly recommend purchasing at least a medium weight wedding ring to allow enough depth for diamonds in the future.
At Serendipity Diamonds we will only diamond set plain bands that have been purchased from Serendipity, so please remember this. We support the original ring which cannot be done with third-party wedding rings, but if you’re a returning client this will never be an issue.

The cost of re-making a ring depends on the type of ring being re-made. In addition, the cost of materials used for the new ring. Due to the varying types of ring, the possibilities are endless. Here we’ll concentrate on two alternatives—remaking an engagement ring and re-making a wedding ring. Finally, we’ve added a further example, remaking an eternity ring with a short video clip of the design.
Remaking a badly damaged engagement ring
If you intend to have your engagement ring re-made, we can re-use your existing gemstones. In addition, we can factor in the existing precious metal.
Example of a Palladium engagement ring, badly damaged. The new ring is shown on the right after a complete re-build in the original design, which included re-setting the original diamond. The final cost of any such work is off-set against the scrap metal of the original ring mount. Price guide $550 USD for the re-made ring including setting and finishing.
Example : Re-making a bespoke Platinum engagement ring faithful to the original design
Guide to cost in 950 Platinum : £1300.00
Our example below was crafted for a client who experienced repeat issues with her engagement ring. Purchased at auction, some years ago, the ring’s construction caused the loss of diamonds from inadequate settings. As a result, we were commissioned to create a matching design with an improved build quality. In addition, the engagement ring had to match her diamond set wedding ring. Since we had previously crafted the wedding ring, we just needed to clean and re-finish this ring.
Step 1. CAD Design
Working alongside the wedding ring, we created a CAD design of the replacement engagement ring. Modelled for the existing diamonds, the new setting would accommodate our client’s diamonds perfectly.
Step 2. Creating the new engagement ring
Once completed, our client was happy to sign-off the designs. Re-making a ring takes several weeks. As a result, the timescale worked out to around 5 weeks once the CAD design was approved.

Re-making an engagement ring with missing diamonds
If you are missing diamonds from your original engagement ring (or if you have broken diamonds) we provide a service to match and replace any diamonds lost. As a result, once re-made, your diamond ring appears as-new with colour and clarity matched diamonds.
Remaking a ring using bespoke design
Re-making any type of ring by bespoke design costs a little more. This is due to the additional work to design and individually craft a new ring. Part of the process involves re-creating the ring using CAD design. This intricate process makes a digital version of the ring. We retain the CAD model on file. Should your new ring be lost or damaged beyond repair, we can re-make the ring from the original model. As a result we re-create a perfect replica ring design.
Showing incredible attention to detail worked into the ring design. Even the underside of the ring is given due consideration.
Offsetting the cost when re-making a ring
We can offset the cost a little factoring in the existing precious metal. This will reduce the overall cost slightly. We calculate the value of your existing metal from the gram weight, multiplied by the scrap metal price once work has been completed on your ring.
Re-using old Gold or Platinum to make a new engagement ring
We are regularly asked to make engagement rings, wedding rings and jewellery using old Gold and Platinum. We offer this service, using 100% of your existing precious metal for the new design. This often requires additional Gold or Platinum to be added as part of the process.
How much does it cost to melt down a ring to make a new one?
Surprisingly, the process of melting down a ring to remake a new one is more expensive than when we create an item from new Gold or Platinum. The reason is twofold. Firstly, the item is isolated to ensure that the original metal is kept separate from other work. Secondly, the additional work to process and craft the original metal is more involved.
Adding coloured gemstones to brand new ring designs
If you already have an existing coloured gemstone, why not add the gem to a brand new ring design. Choose from existing ring styles, or let us CAD design the same or a new design to accommodate a very large gemstone. This service comes after many years of experience resetting coloured gems into rings.
Unique coloured gemstones added to new ring designs. From left to right : Aquamarine, Tanzanite, Opal, Fire Opal and Purple Spinel.
So why use old Gold or Platinum?
There is a very good reason for reusing old Gold or Platinum, rather than offsetting the cost of the ring by selling the metal as part of the process. This reason is sentimental. If you have an heirloom ring or an item of intense sentimental value, this can be transformed into the new item.
Re-making your engagement ring with a bigger diamond
For some clients, we re-create their original engagement ring with a much larger diamond size. It is very difficult to add a bigger diamond to an existing engagement ring. Sometimes, we can add a new setting to hold a larger diamond. Over the years, many couples look towards buying a more expensive engagement ring when finances permit. This way they retain the original ring design with a bigger diamond.
Remaking a promise ring as an engagement ring
Consider turning your pre-engagement, commitment or promise ring into an engagement ring. Either by design, or by re-making the ring. Depending on the ring style, this could be a good way to transfer sentiment to your engagement ring.
Making a brand new ring with your own gemstone
We offer a complete re-modelling service. One of our most popular services helps clients with a loose gemstone create an incredible piece of jewellery. We model a brand new ring design to your diamond or gemstone to create an exceptional one-off piece of jewellery.

Re-making a wedding ring
Wedding ring designs can be faithfully replicated—even those with intricate detail such as hand engravings. Badly worn wedding rings or heirloom rings can be re-made as new. The cost will depend on the work involved and materials. Gold rings can be re-made in 950 Platinum or another choice of precious metal. The following image shows a recent commission. Subtle detail such as engraving on the outer edge was faithfully re-created across the re-made wedding ring.
Remaking a diamond eternity ring
Recently, we re-created a White Gold diamond eternity ring in Platinum. In addition, our client needed a different finger size. In fact, the original ring no longer fitted. For this reason, we re-made the original ring. Seizing the opportunity to upgrade to naturally white Platinum, we remade the eternity ring. Our video below shows the original ring mount. In addition, we show the final Platinum eternity ring.
Reproduction Antique ring designs
Another important service we offer is to re-create an original ring design. This often includes an upsizing and scaling of the original ring into a much larger design. In the following instance, we re-created an Opal and diamond antique ring, re-modelling this to include a (very hard-to-find) cabochon domed opal, surrounded with large diamonds in a cluster.
The cost of this service depends entirely on the commission and the materials required to create the ring. Please contact us for guidance.

Ring mountings and diamond settings
If you prefer to purchase an empty ring mounting or setting, instead of a complete ring, we can help. We provide a complete service to purchase ring mountings and diamond settings for any gemstones. Find out more by reading our dedicated information page.
How to get further help
If you require further help and guidance on remaking a ring or any item of jewellery, contact a member of our helpful team. We can assist and advise on all aspects of this work. Please leave at least 5-6 weeks for the process, owing to the time needed to discuss, design, re-model and craft your new ring.

What Are Flush Settings?Flush diamond settings explained
Flush ring settings are also known by the term “Gypsy Settings.” Diamonds, precious stones and semi-precious stones are all suitable for setting into the metal of a piece of jewellery with this method.
Any diamond shape is suitable for the flush setting. The edges of the metal from around the diamond girdle by burnishing.
The diamond will appear flush with the surface of the metal as a result. The technique is ideal for cambered surfaces of metal.
This actually makes setting the stones easier, using the raised edges of the curved surface. If the metal is at least 1mm deep, it will be thick enough to take the pressure applied during setting.
The following gemstone set wedding rings feature flush-set gemstones available in a variety of colours.
Considerations for Flush Set Wedding Rings and Jewellery
One of the most important details relates to the depth of the stone and metal. If the diamond is too deep, then the culet of the diamond will protrude and will rub against the finger.
Measuring the depth of the metal and the diamond will ensure that the metal depth is not exceeded by the diamond chosen.
A hard, durable stone choice ensures the stone does not break since fragile stone types can shatter from pressure applied during setting.
Different Types of Flush Set Jewellery
Flush settings exist for a broad scope of jewellery products. There is no restriction to the type of jewellery embellished by flush settings.
The design below shows a flush set diamond and blue sapphire shaped wedding ring contoured to fit a pear-shaped engagement ring.
Flush set diamonds are popular in wedding ring styles and for shoulders of engagement rings.
Diamond sizes are typically small, less than 2mm generally. Much larger diamonds usually need a bezel on the ring to allow for the added depth.
Both round diamonds, Princess cut diamonds and fancy shaped diamonds are popular choices, but round stones work perfectly since they are slightly easier to set.
Flush Set Diamond Necklaces
The addition of a flush-set diamonds adds sparkle and life to a necklace. An otherwise plain necklace dazzles with a tiny diamond embedded into the surface of precious metal. The design below shows a small round brilliant-cut diamond flush-set into a fingerprint engraved necklace available in our engravable pendants collection.
The video clip below shows a similar pendant design with a single flush-set diamond in addition to a child’s footprints engraved onto the design.
