What is an Illusion Setting?
An illusion setting enhances the perceived size of the diamond within a setting. Most illusion-set engagement rings present a small diamond surrounded by patterned precious metal. As a result, the setting appears larger from a distance.
The overall effect of the gives an illusion of a larger diamond. There are many illusion designs working on this concept. In addition to scale, most illusion set diamond rings appear larger than their respective carat weights.
The illusion setting is attributed historically to the Frenchman Oscar Massin—born in Liège in 1829. Following his apprenticeship from 1842 to 1851, he lived in Paris and found work as a bench jeweller. His promotion in 1854 came after the discovery of his drawings by the proprietor.
Another jeweller, Oscar Massin, devised the Illusion setting or ‘Illusory Setting‘, designed to emphasise the visible size of a diamond. Interestingly, many antique and modern examples use the same basic principle for an enhanced effect.
Illusion Solitaire Rings
Alternatively, some cluster ring designs mimic the appearance and size of a large single (see solitaire diamond). Furthermore, the cost of such rings is normally far less than a single stone ring of the same size. Moreover, small faceted diamonds form a circular arrangement.
From a distance, the combined effect gives the illusion of a solitaire engagement ring. Cleverly, the addition of four claws enhances the effect. Typically, the claws are purely decorative and serve no functional purpose.

Rings with Invisible Settings.
The Illusion Setting should not be confused with the Invisible Setting. An invisible setting displays the diamond in a very simple way. Furthermore, in many invisible settings, the diamond appears to float above the ring.
The Unity engagement ring (see Unity R1D078 on our design pages) features a round brilliant cut diamond ‘floating’ invisibly within the setting. The diamond is held under tension between each side of the setting.
Alternative styles of invisibly set diamond rings
Another popular ring style features a seamless arrangement of diamonds to give the appearance of one large diamond. Here, we have four Princess cut diamonds arranged within a solitaire design. Instead of a 1-carat single diamond, each diamond weighs 0.25 carats. As a result, the cost of the ring is greatly reduced.
To achieve this effect, the connecting diamond edges feature a unique tongue-and-groove pattern. As a result, they fit together. However, we advise caution with such ring designs. Many originate from overseas jewellery manufacturers.
Buyers unfortunate to damage their ring and lose a diamond often struggle to arrange a replacement diamond. In many such cases, the entire ring has to be replaced due to the unique style of the diamond setting. In fact, some designs are accomplished by setting diamonds in the wax model—and then casting the ring with diamonds already in place. This makes repair extremely difficult on such ring designs.
Why choose an Illusion Setting?
Illusion settings often mimic a larger single diamond (solitaire) design at a fraction of the cost. In comparison to a solitaire ring, the cost is significantly less. Earlier ring styles set with one small diamond gave protection to the diamond within the surrounding metal.
Diamond effect wedding rings
Illusion wedding rings transform the surface of a wedding ring. This mimics the effect of diamonds. Ingeniously, this machined pattern gives the effect of diamonds without the cost of the diamonds. Sometimes referred to as sparkle-cut wedding rings, this style of ring is very popular with nurses working within the NHS. For hygiene reasons, diamond set rings cannot be worn during work. As a result, the Sparkle Cut wedding ring makes a great deal of sense. Especially in white metals, the patterned effect of diamonds works around the problem.
The sparkle-cut wedding ring uses a similar effect to give the appearance of diamonds.
