When clients come to visit us to discuss options for diamond wedding rings, they are usually unaware of the various wedding ring settings available.

Many pre-existing designs exist in various widths, and carat weight options depending on the level of customisation required. Sometimes a client prefers a greater or lesser extent of diamonds. Moreover, the colour and clarity need to match the engagement ring, our friendly team are always on hand to advise on this.

Here are a few of the alternative diamond settings available for wedding rings.

1. The flush setting

Size is limited to the depth of the diamond, ill-advised if a thin, lighter weight wedding ring is used.
A certain setting depth is necessary to allow the diamond to be flush set into the metal.

Rounds, Princess cuts and fancy shapes are available in this same style and any arrangement. Here you see a staggered arrangement, but it is just as easy to space diamonds around the ring.
To summarise, the most cost effective route to a fully set diamond wedding ring.

2. The Channel Setting

Classic channel set anniversary ring

The channel setting is perhaps the most classic of setting styles. With diamonds retained by the continuous setting edge, each stone is positioned end-to-end around either a partially or around a full set design. As an example, making a perfect addition against a solitaire engagement ring, complementing the center stone.

Diamonds can be set in various cuts to achieve unique and individual results. Square shaped diamonds such as the Princess cut or Baguette Cut is best where no space is preferred between diamonds. As their flat edges flush sit together in an unbroken ribbon of diamond around the full extent of the channel. The diamonds can also be set into different ring profiles and widths, with larger diamonds requiring deeper ring profiles.

3. The Grain Setting

Grain settings across a diamond wedding ring

Often created with a fine border, the diamonds are held within grains of metal rather than between the edges of a channel.

Compared to the Pavé setting these two styles can appear similar at first glance, but the small grains of metal can be seen surrounding each diamond upon closer inspection.

The overall look is very different from the claw set wedding ring, and the plain polished edge can give a ring a smoother neater appearance. Many of the shaped wedding ring designs we produce feature this style. Grain set diamond wedding rings are a beautiful alternative and work nicely, especially alongside claw set diamond engagement rings.

4. The Claw Setting

Popular for both diamond set wedding rings and diamond eternity rings, the claw setting provides another alternative setting style for many shapes of the diamond. The rings featured have been crafted to complement and fit together perfectly. With the diamonds in the wedding ring being hand matched to the side stones in the engagement ring.

This style might be chosen to sit alongside an engagement ring with a similar setting style. Half set diamond wedding rings with claws are more suitable for sizing than channel settings since each diamond can be individually secured instead of sharing the same setting edge as the entire set of diamonds.

The claw setting can be combined with a plain shank with a graduated plain band around the underside of the finger. Altogether a lovely, classic and very popular, versatile alternative setting type.

5. The Full Bezel Setting

As an example, our fully set bezel set diamond wedding ring crafted in 18ct Yellow Gold. Due to the precious metal option being 18ct Yellow Gold, the diamonds contrast against the colour, enhancing them even more than a white metal.

In addition to yellow gold, designs are crafted in white gold, rose gold, and 950 Platinum. Each diamond within the wedding ring set into its continuous metal frame. This could be created for most diamond shapes, but the precise sizing found amongst round brilliant cut diamonds makes a perfect and popular diamond shape for such wedding rings.

Bespoke Design And Setting Styles

Crafting bespoke designs with a desired setting style can be arranged through a complete design process. For instance, this option is preferred to fit alongside an unusual engagement ring style. Making a shaped design can be done by either working with you remotely or by visiting our showroom.

One of our favourite techniques relies on carving a wax version of your shaped ring. This wax model is used to cast in your chosen precious metal. We can 3D scan your Engagement Ring and provide a CAD image to show how your shaped ring will look.

bespoke emerald set wedding ring

As shown in an example of a bespoke wedding ring, bar settings or tension settings create a modern design. Set with alternating white diamonds and emeralds, emeralds share a connection with the month of May.

As a result, green Emeralds make perfect birthstones. Likewise, an anniversary falling in May can be a perfect occasion for an Emerald eternity ring. Contact a team member to enquire about an Emerald design.

Grain settings is one of the most popular wedding ring settings for bespoke commissions. The subtle shape of the design complements the diamonds being grain set. For example, a bespoke shaped wedding ring was crafted for one of our popular bubble ring designs.
