Buying diamond studs is all about balancing beauty, quality, and value. Knowing what to look for helps you choose a pair that feels timeless—something you’ll enjoy for years and can even pass down to future children.

Diamond Quality Evaluation: The 4Cs

Diamonds are evaluated according to the 4Cs, a scale developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1940s by founder Robert M. Shipley who first called this method, “the 4Cs of diamond quality.”

Grading according to the 4Cs is a transparent way to convey diamond quality worldwide from businesses to consumers. Because it is universally understood, GIA’s diamond grading provides unbiased results that the diamond industry and diamond customers trust worldwide.

The 4Cs for diamond quality include: Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat. Color refers to the diamond’s natural hue, or the absence of color in white diamonds (grade D-Z, with D being colorless). Clarity measures the presence of internal or external flaws (inclusions or blemishes of the cut stone). Cut determines how well the stone reflects light based on its symmetry and proportions. Carat indicates the diamond’s weight.

Shopping for Diamond Shape

Cut should not be confused with shape. Shape refers to the outline of the stone, or the silhouette. Popular shapes include the round brilliant cut, emerald, oval, radiant, and pear.

Round Brilliant Studs

Round brilliant diamonds continue to be the most sought-after cut for stud earrings, loved for their classic style and exceptional sparkle. Our collection offers several of these studs in a range of carat weights, making it easy to find the perfect pair for your look.

If you want a brilliant diamond with a unique twist, the pear shape is a standout choice. Its rounded base tapers to a point, and with 57–58 facets, it shines just as brightly as a round brilliant.

Shopping for Studs by Total Carat Weight (ctw)

As mentioned, carat weight refers to the weight, not the size. Carat total weight (total weight of the stones) is frequently abbreviated to “ctw or “TW” Diamonds that weigh more than one carat, like a 1.09 carat stone, are referred to in carats and decimals, such as “one point oh nine.” Smaller diamonds below one carat are referred to as points, calling a diamond that weighs 0.25 carats a “twenty-five pointer.” (GIA). When comparing two diamonds with all factors being equal except the larger carat weight, the one with the larger carat weight will be more expensive.

Stud Design Details: Settings

The setting is an important part of the design of the earrings, holding the stone in place. Common settings include bezel, which is a metal rim encasing the stone, protecting it from damage.
